We can all agree that social media has changed the way people get information. Breaking news is disseminated faster through Facebook and Twitter than news websites, often because users ‘share’ links on their accounts, making it unnecessary to leave social media networks.
So how can you, the PR or marketing professional use this to your advantage? By keeping a few things in mind.
1. Everything is Amplified Online
You may think your latest article is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but so does everyone else in your news feed. Take care in choosing which content you promote or users will ignore you no matter how loud you shout.
2. Word of Mouth
Once you’ve written a killer article, make sure readers can easily share it. Email is great, but now you can add social media sharing buttons that allow users to link your article to their accounts with one click.
3. Mobile Accessible
Okay, people can share your article from their computer, but what about their phone? If you don’t know how to ensure your content is viewable from a mobile device, check with an IT professional or find out online.
4. Content is Still Number One
All these bells and whistles are great, but you still need solid content if you want people to view you as a reliable resource. Master the first three tips, but don’t forget your main goal: to get your information to your target audience (and drive them to act on it).
And finally,
5. One Person Can’t Do It Alone
It’s not uncommon for several employees to maintain a company’s social media accounts. In fact, some places have created fake employees to at least keep the appearance that all the information is coming from one source. As long as you’re open about your practices, this can be a good route to go.
